Why recycled aluminium stacks up
Recycling aluminium uses roughly 5 percent of the energy needed to smelt primary metal from bauxite, with a similar order of greenhouse gas saving. The alloy can be remelted repeatedly with little loss of structural properties, so a billet does not degrade the way some recycled materials do.
For windows and doors that matters twice over. The frame carries a lower embodied carbon figure at handover, and at end of life the profile is a feedstock rather than waste. Aluminium separates easily from glass and gaskets and sells into an established scrap market.
The point for specifiers is that the environmental case is built into the material, not bolted on. You are not paying a green premium for a worse product.
What to ask for on the spec
Recycled content varies by billet source and finish, so ask the supplier to state it rather than assume it. Post-consumer scrap carries a stronger claim than pre-consumer offcuts, and anodised or powder-coated profiles can differ again.
The document that backs this up is an Environmental Product Declaration, or EPD. It reports cradle-to-grave impact to a common standard, so you can compare two systems on like terms instead of trusting a marketing line.
- Stated recycled content, split into post-consumer and pre-consumer where possible
- A product or system EPD to a recognised construction standard, not a generic industry average
- Powder coat to a recognised quality mark for coating life and recoatability
- Confirmation the thermal break and gaskets do not stop the frame being recycled
Sustainability and performance pull the same way
A frame that lasts longer is a frame you replace less often, which is the largest carbon saving of all. Aluminium does not rot or warp, powder coatings hold up in coastal and urban exposure, and a well made system stays serviceable for decades.

Thermal performance is set by the whole assembly, not the recycled content. Treat sustainability and U-value as two checks on the same drawing, not a trade-off.
Where ventilation fits
Tighter, better sealed frames change how a room breathes, so background ventilation has to be planned alongside the glazing. Under current Building Regulations guidance for England, replacement windows are generally expected to leave ventilation no worse than before, which often means a trickle vent in the new unit.
Confirm the requirement against the current Approved Document and the specific job before you order, since provision depends on the property and the work being done. We can supply vented profiles where the specification calls for them.
Get this agreed at survey. Retrofitting ventilation after install is the avoidable cost on this kind of project.
